Report on Jobs – October survey 2017

The Report on Jobs captures original survey data which provide the most up-to-date monthly picture of recruitment, employment, staff availability and employee earnings trends available. There are two reports, one covering the UK as a whole and one focused specifically on the North of England.

The Report on Jobs is a monthly publication produced by IHS Markit and sponsored by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation.

Here are the key points from the UK Report on Jobs:

• Growth of staff appointments held back by uncertain outlook and skill shortages
• Availability of permanent and temporary workers continues to fall sharply
• Starting salaries increase at second-quickest rate since November 2015

Here are the key points from the North Report on Jobs:

• Temp billings expand sharply in October and at fastest pace in 17 months
• Growth of permanent placements picks up, but remains subdued by historical standards
• Availability of candidates continues to deteriorate

“Last month, recruiters helped even more people find permanent jobs – this is great news as it shows that employers are continuing to hire. However, the data also shows that growth is slowing down and one of the reasons is that we simply do not have enough people for all the roles that are out there at the moment. And the number of vacancies is still getting higher.

“For jobseekers this is good news as employers are willing to pay higher starting wages to attract the right candidates.”
