Report on Jobs – May

The Report on Jobs captures original survey data which provides the most up-to-date monthly picture of recruitment, employment, staff availability and employee earnings trends available. There are three reports, one covering the UK as a whole, one focused specifically on the North of England and one on the South.

The Report on Jobs is a monthly publication produced by IHS Markit and sponsored by KPMG and REC.

“The job stats from May were to be expected with the impact of COVID-19. This has included job falls for both permanent and contract workers, with the number of people looking for roles growing sharply. Here are the key points from the North Report on Jobs:

• Demand for workers drops considerably.
• Labour supply rises markedly amid reports of red.0undancies
• Versus April, May shows an improvement in placements and temporary billings, with early data in June showing an even more promising increase.

Here are the key points from the South Report on Jobs:

• Substantial falls in permanent placements and temp billings.
• Starting salaries decline at quickest rate on record.
• Candidate availability rises sharply.

Here are the key points from the UK Report on Jobs:

• Permanent placements and temp billings decline further amid recruitment freezes.
• Availability of workers rises at quickest rate since July 2009.
• Early data in June indicates a positive spike in vacancies and an increase in placements.

Neil Carberry, Chief Executive at Recruitment & Employment Confederation says:

“Given the impact of the lockdown in early May, it’s no surprise that these figures look bleak. But in the two weeks since this data was collected, lockdown rules have been eased and the feedback we get from recruiters every day suggests that the slight improvements that we can see in the placements and vacancies data have continued. I’m also hearing from business leaders all over the country that things are starting to look up. There is a long way to go, but it’s time to talk about how we recover from this crisis.

“Collaboration between government, businesses and recruiters will be vital as we try to get the economy up and running again. The UK’s staffing and recruitment companies are experts at helping people find work, and we are ready to support jobseekers in the months ahead.”
